Investigation of the Mechanical Properties and Wear Resistance of Al6061 Composites Fabricated by Stir Casting Method

  • Aluminium matrix composites (AMCs), which have better tribological and mechanical properties than other conventional alloys, have a lot of potential for important uses in the automotive, defense, aerospace, marine, agricultural, and nuclear engineering industries. In this work, attempts were made to construct AMCs reinforced with various weight percentages of different reinforcement particles, namely boron carbide (B4C), titanium diboride (TiB2), and silicon carbide (SiC), in order to improve the tensile behaviour, hardness, and wear resistance. The reinforcement particles with different weight percentages (1, 3, and 5%) were added to Al6061 using the stir casting technique. This work can be divided into two parts: in the first part, the reinforcement particles were added separately (single-reinforcement composite), while in the second part of this work, hybrid composites (hybrid-reinforcement) were fabricated. The tensile strength, hardness, and wear of the AMCs were investigated. Each experiment was repeated three times to ensure repeatability, and an average was taken. In addition, an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope were used to characterize the AMCs. The SEM examination shows that the reinforcement particles are distributed evenly throughout the Al6061 matrix. The results of the first part of this investigation show that adding different amounts of TiB2 and B4C separately, i.e., as single-reinforcement composite, enhanced the ultimate tensile strength, the composites' hardness, and their wear resistance. The most interesting thing to come out of the data is that adding a small amount of TiB2 particles increases the hardness of the composites much more than previous research has shown. The results also showed that by adding 1 % wt. of B4C, and 3 wt.% of TiB2, the composites had a lower wear rate and higher wear resistance compared to the base alloy. The findings also showed that by adding 5% wt. of SiC, the wear resistance and hardness were enhanced compared with the base alloy. However, 1 % wt. of the particles has a higher ultimate tensile strength.

    In the second part of this study, an attempt has been made to fabricate hybrid aluminium matrix composites (Al6061/3% B4C+TiB2) at various proportions of TiB2 (1, 3, 5% wt.). The results showed that (Al6061/3%B4C+5%TiB2) has a higher hardness and tensile strength. Due to the porosity in the samples, (Al6061/3%B4C+1%TiB2) has a lower wear rate and is more resistant to wear. The most obvious finding to emerge from this study is that adding TiB2 particles reinforced with Al6061 as a matrix has higher results compared to the other particles that are used.

    ئەم توێژینەوەیە بە ناونیشانی "ئاستی پابەندبوونی میدیاکاران بە پرەنسیپەکانی ئیتیک و یاسای میدیا لە هەرێمی کوردستاندا، میدیای نوێ بە نموونە"، کە لە میدیای نوێدا ماڵپەڕە ئەلیکترۆنییەکان لە هەرێمی کوردستان وەرگیراون، لە جۆری توێژینەوەی وەسفییە كه‌ تێیدا سوود لە میتۆدی تێکەڵاو(Mixed Method) وەرگیراوە، بەبەکارهێنانی فۆڕمی ڕاپرسی و ئامرازی چاوپێکەوتن. کۆمەڵگەی توێژینەوەکە بریتییە لە میدیاکارانی نێو ماڵپەڕە ئەلیکترۆنییەکان لە هەرێمی کوردستان. نموونەی توێژینەوەكە بریتییە لە (200) میدیاکار كە لە ماڵپەڕە ئەلیکترۆنییەکان لە هەرێمی كوردستان كاردەكەن، ، بەشێوەی ناهەڕەمەکی مەبەستدار هەڵبژێردراون. کێشەی ئەم توێژینەوەیە بریتییە لە تێگەیشتن و گەیشتن بە ئاستی پابەندبوونی میدیاکاران لە میدیای نوێ بە پرەنسیپەکانی ئیتیک و یاسای میدیا لە هەرێمی کوردستاندا، هەروەها دۆزینەوەی هۆکارەکانی پابەندنەبوونی میدیاکاران بە ئیتیک و یاسای میدیا. ئەم توێژینەوەیە گرنگە  لە ڕووانگەی کۆمەڵگەوە دەبێتە هۆی کەمکردنەوەی کێشە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان، کە بە کاریگەری میدیای نابەرپرس و میدیاکاری نائەکادیمی دروست دەبێت، لە ڕووی زانستیەوە گرنگە دەبێتە هۆی بەرزکردنەوەی ئاستی پابەندبوونی میدیاکاران بە ئیتیک و یاسای میدیا لە هەرێمی کوردستان، هەروەها دەبێتە هۆی کەمکردنەوەی گرفتە میدیاییەکان وبەرزکردنەوەی کوالێتی پەیامە میدیاییەکان لە کەناڵەکانی میدیا بە تایبەت لە میدیای نوێ دا. گرنگترین دەرئەنجامەکانی توێژینەوەکە بریتیین لە:

    ئاستی پابەندبوون بە بەرپرسیارێتی کۆمەڵگە لەلایەن میدیاکارانەوە ڕێژەییە، بەشێکیان پابەندن وبەشێکیان پابەندنین، بەڵام پابەندنەبوونیان زیاترە، چونکە زۆرێک لە دەزگاکانی میدیا و میدیاکاران لە میدیای نوێ بەناوی بەرپرسیارێتی کۆمەڵایەتی، هەوڵی بەدەستهێنان و کۆکردنەوەی زۆرترین جەماوەر دەدەن.

    بەهۆی ئەوەی بەشێک لە میدیاکارانی ماڵپەڕە ئەلیکترۆنییەکان ئاشنای پرەنسیپەکانی ئیتیک و یاسای میدیا لە هەرێمی کوردستان نین، هەروەها ئامرازەکانی میدیای نوێ بۆ یەکلاکردنەوەی ململانێ سیاسیەکان بەکاردەهێنرێت، بوونەتە بەربەست بۆ میدیاکاران  و وایکردووە پابەندنەبن بە ئیتیکی میدیایی و یاسای میدیا لە هەرێمی کوردستان.

Erbil Polytechnic University And Rwanga Foundation Emphasize The Necessity Of  Collaboration Between Them

Prof. Dr. Edrees Muhamad Tahir Harki, the Erbil Polytechnic University Rector and Mr. Abdulsalam Madani, The General Director of Rwanga Foundation Non-Governmental Organization stressed on the need for collaboration between the Erbil Polytechnic University and Rwanga Foundation and carry out joint work.

On Thursday, the 6th of April, 2023, Prof. Dr. Edrees Muhamad Tahir Harki, the Rector of the Erbil Polytechnic University and Mr. Abdulsalam Madani, the General Director of the Rwanga Foundation Non-Governmental Organization met.

In the meeting Asst. Prof. Dr.  Nageb Toma Bato, the Vice Rector for Scientific Affairs and Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Ranj Sirwan Abdullah, the Director of the International Relations Office, Mr. Sarmand Barzanji, the Administrative Director of the University, and Mr. Govar Haress, the Director of Media of the Rwanga Foundation were present Prof. Dr. Edrees Muhamad Tahir Harki expressed his pleasure at the meeting and spoke about the structure of the Erbil Polytechnic University, that beside the Erbil Center it has colleges and institutes in districts outside Erbil, as well as several different fields and departments, which is an opportunity to increase collaboration and joint work between the two sides.

From his side, Mr. Abdulsalam Madani, the General Director of Rwanga thanked the Erbil Polytechnic University Rector and his accompanying delegation for their visit and expressed their readiness of the Foundation for collaboration and cooperation.

Implementation of projects that will create more job opportunities for youth in general and graduates of our university in particular was another topic of the meeting, for this purpose, both sides agreed to hold more meetings in the future and set a comprehensive program for this issue.
