  • Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the deadliest tumor’s due to its competence to invade and metastasize. Multiple genetic and epigenetic alterations are implicated in gastric carcinogenesis. In addition, this disease is mostly diagnosed at a late stage. The DNA repair gene x-ray repair cross-complementing protein (XRCC1), Cytokine Interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene, and anti-apoptotic B-cell lymphoma (Bcl-2) gene perform a crucial role in the development and progression of GC. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of these target genes in GC patients in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (KRG). Gastric cancer tissues were taken from 29 patients that were diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma that underwent gastric resection and 21 tissue samples were taken from healthy patients that underwent
gastroscopy. The gastric tissues were collected in different hospitals in Erbil- and Sulaymaniyah city in the Kurdistan region of Iraq and stored at -80 ֯C for molecular purposes. Data regarding the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, age, and gender of the gastric patients with their stage of the disease were recorded and analyzed using GraphPad Prism. The gene expression levels of XRCC1, IL8, and Bcl-2 from gastric tissue were studied by quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR). The result showed that H. pylori infection was equally distributed among males and females in the tissues of gastric patients, while most of the H.pylori-negative patients were females. It is also found that gastric patients between 30-60 years old were more commonly positive tested for the H. pylori test. Furthermore, in this study patients diagnosed with gastric inflammation were more often tested positive for H. pylori, while patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were all negative tested for this infection. Additionally, it was found that the target genes (XRCC1, IL-8, and Bcl-2) were significantly upregulated in GC patients compared to the healthy group. Taking together, our result revealed that XRCC1, IL-8, and Bcl-2 were upregulated in gastric cancer patients compared to the healthy control group. This may indicate that these target genes could play role in gastric carcinogenesis and therefore, targeting XRCC1, IL-8, and Bcl-2 genes might be an interesting field and promising strategy for cancer treatment.

Prof. Dr. Yousif Mustafa Rasul delivered a speech on behalf of the conference committee and welcomed the participants and spoke about the importance of the conference for the students and said: The conference is to present the products of the students’ efforts and skills in carrying out graduation projects with the help and supervision of teachers.”

Then the Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Edrees Muhamad Tahir Harki welcomed the participating party and government officials, teachers and students and said: “On behalf of myself and the council of Erbil Polytechnic University, we welcome the guests and congratulate the students who successfully passed these stages In the 3rd Student Scientific Conference.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Conference preparations are generally carried out in all academic institutions and centers around the world. Each conference does not exceed several days, but preparations may take several months or more than a year , our question here is that while a conference takes all the time, effort, expense and preparation, is it worth all the effort? Or is a conference necessary?

“Yes, scientific conferences are necessary for researchers, students and teachers in all academic and university centers. We all know what an important role scientific research plays in human life and the development of society Electronics, agriculture, etc. and any aspect of science is necessary for human life and the progress of society.

Scientific research itself has a significant role in human life and is a door to the progress of society. If scientific research is a door to the progress of society, the key is to publish the research Our importance in holding a scientific conference is that you can publish the results of the research at the conference, read and evaluate them. On the other hand, several scientists or groups of similar expertise come closer to each other Researchers who meet and sit together at conferences may exchange ideas, solve each other’s problems, and become familiar with the laboratories and equipment available in scientific centers that can benefit each other.

In addition to the benefits I mentioned, holding scientific conferences has another importance, which is that when a scientific conference is held in one country is held again in another country, in this regard, we can benefit from each other’s culture.

We want to hold it in a different place every year, this day in Mergasor and one day in Shaqlawa, Koya, Soran, Khabat and Erbil Or why is it useful to hold scientific conferences?

Therefore, we felt it necessary to pay attention to this issue. This is another lesson for students to know how conferences are held in academic centers and universities.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the conference organizing committee and the deanship of Mergasur Technical Institute for hosting the conference.

During the opening ceremony, the Rector of the University honored Dr. Talib Mohammed Sharif, the Dean of Mergasur Technical Institute; Sarwar Hussein, Dean of Choman Technical Institute; Hazhar Mohammed Hussein on the occasion of his scientific degree.

Afterwards, students’ seminars were held according to the specialized sectors of administration, engineering and technology, medicine, agriculture, which were divided into four seminar halls. The evaluators of different sectors evaluated the students’ projects.

67 papers in the fields of management, engineering, technology, medicine and agriculture participated in the conference.

At the end of the conference, the university Rector presented awards to the conference organizing committees, evaluators and sub-committees.
