Second Scientific Students conference of the Erbil Polytechnic University has started its Work

On the 27th of June 2021, the Second Scientific Students Conference has started, which will continue for two days. In this conference, the Rector of the EPU, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kawa Abdulkareem Sherwani, the Erbil Governor Mr. Umed Khoshnaw, the Head Chef of the Safin 24th Branch of Democratic Kurdistan Party, Hiwa Ahmed Mustafa, the Shaqlawa Surrogate, Ibrahim Shexalla, the President of Lebanese-French University, Dr. Muhammed Sadiq khoshnaw, the Secretary of the Student’s Union of Kurdistan, Nechirvan Hussein Kalari, and several of the EPU Council members were present.

The conference started with the Kurdistan national anthem ‘Ai Raqib’ and a summary of Shaqlawa Technical College. Then, the EPU Rector Assistant for Students Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yousif Mustafa Rasul delivered a speech in which he, on behalf of the Students Conference Higher Committee, welcomed the participants and talked about the importance of the conference. He said, “last year, the conference successfully performed its work online due to the pandemic situation of the Corona Covid-19. This year the final stage projects of the colleges and institutes will be delivered during this conference. The conference idea is to give a great role to the students who are the essential elements of the university, and they are the target of the Education Process.”

During this conference, his Excellency Asst. Prof. Dr. Kawa Abdulkareem Sherwani presented his statement in which he warmly received the guests and the conference attendees. He said, “I am glad we meet at this scientific student’s conference for the second time as we worked for it for the past two years. We step forward towards Bologna Process, and we implement the ECTS System. In this process, the student is the focal point, not the instructor. The students by themselves perform necessary works and activities, and lecturers are just supervisors. All these make us work effortlessly for students’ projects and researches, that is why two years ago we decided to hold the conference annually. We should realize that the scientific conferences are not only for the instructors and researchers, but students also can do researches, especially at the final stages of their studies, whether they are in colleges or institutes. In the current new world, most of the works turn to projects. Making and writing projects are sorts of learning. Even in language learning, we can find books to learn a language through a project. When we mention the project, it is more concerned with practical works, not theoretical, i.e., studying and memorizing. This is why a few years ago the academic sectors more care about projects.”

In another part of his speech, the EPU Rector said, “I wish success for the students who attended this conference. I hope the lecturers support the students in their projects and evaluate them to use the best ones in the Kurdistan Region, university. The community uses them in private or public sectors to get benefit from them by Kurdistan Region. The instructors’ responsibility is to evaluate students’ projects and find a way to implement them.”

Finally, I want to express my gratitude towards the higher committee and conference arrangers who worked very hard to conduct this conference successfully. I also thank Shaqlawa Technical College Dean, his assistant, and academic staff.”

The conference includes 800 projects which divided on six different specialty sector which are prepared by 367 students as the following:

  • Medical Specialty Sector (Erbil technical Health College) 6 kinds of research
  • Engineering Specialty Sector Erbil technical Engineering College) 12 pieces of research.
  • Administration Specialty Sector (Erbil technical Administration College) 9 projects
  • Medical Specialty Sector (Technical Institutes) 24 pieces of research
  • Technology and Informatics Sector (Technical Institutes) 24 pieces of research
  • Agricultural Specialty Sector (Technical Institutes) 5 pieces of research

Erbil Polytechnic University has been Awarded the UK Global Challenge Research Fund to Enhance Education for Syrian Children in Iraq

The Erbil Polytechnic University is delighted to announce that one of its academic staff, Dr. Dashne A. Sedeeq, lecturer at the International Marketing and Languages Department at the EPU, in collaboration with researchers from De Montfort University (DMU), has been awarded a Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) to realise education’s promise for children refugees from Syria. The project will assess the education provision and learning environments in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (KR-I)

The GCRF Networking Grants Scheme aims to build capacity through research collaborations between a group of researchers in the UK and a group of co-partners, including professors and academics from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I). This collaboration aims to develop high-quality inter-disciplinary and innovative applications to address global challenges faced by Syrian refugees in the field of learning and education inside the refugees’ camps in KR-I.

The EPU will provide input into the project and development workshop. This work will be done in collaboration with Dr. Suha Omer and her colleagues from DMU, who will strengthen research capacities, exchange knowledge, and develop the team’s understanding of the challenges that children and families face in the learning process. The input from this workshop will facilitate the development of the project research instruments.

The kick-off meeting of the project was held on 24th June 2021. This meeting focused on research and collaboration networking, project partners, aims and objectives, and proposed plan. During the meeting, the next plan of action was outlined, which includes website development, visibility of the project, and partners’ contribution to the project. It is planned that a workshop will be held in September 2021 to exchange ideas and discuss the plan of action to conduct the fieldwork in the camps and outside. It is also expected that this project will end in summer 2022.
