On Sunday, February 2nd, 2025, with the attendance of Omed Khoshnaw, the Governor of Erbil, and under the supervision and presence of Prof. Dr. Edrees Muhamed Tahir Herki, the Rector of Erbil Polytechnic University, a panel titled “Terrorism Did Not Differentiate between Us” was held in commemoration of the martyrs of February 1st. The event was also attended by the university’s Vice Rector, several members of the university council, and a number of party and government officials.
The ceremony took place in the hall of our university’s Cultural Centre. At the beginning, the university Rector gave a speech. After welcoming the guests, he explained that the purpose of this event was not just to remember the past but to learn from it and take lessons from the struggles and sacrifices of our people.
The Rector of the university said: “The event of February 1st was one of the most painful events in the modern history of the Kurdistan Region. It showed that the enemies of the Kurdish people did not differentiate between any religious, ethnic, national, ideological, or political groups. Therefore, it was important to remember this event as a national lesson for students, youth, and everyone to learn from the past, protect the homeland today, and plan for the future.”
On February 1st, 2004, which coincided with the first day of Eid al-Adha, in both the second conference hall of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the third hall of the Kurdistan National Union in Erbil, as a result of two terrorist attacks, more than a hundred people were martyred, and hundreds of others were injured.
