Highway and Bridge Engineering Department

Highway and Bridge Engineering Department

Department of Highway Engineering at Erbil Polytechnic University was established in 2012, aiming at cultivating specialized Highway Engineers through its undergraduate programs. With the growth of infrastructure construction in Kurdistan Region-Iraq, Department of Highway Engineering has been established to full fill that matter.

Highway engineering is a branch of civil engineering where Highway engineers are trained to be able to geometrically design a certain road or highway. Also, able to structurally design roads, bridges, and geotechnical structures such as shallow and deep footings; in addition to that enhance the knowledge and practice regarding other transportation facilities such as airports, railways and tunnels.

Highway engineer’s daily routine involves conducting studies that are related to road construction and provide the necessary advice when needed at the site. One main duty of Highway engineers is to determine the optimum location of bridges, interchanges, and culverts.
