Department of Highway Engineering at Erbil Polytechnic University was established in 2012, aiming at cultivating specialized Highway Engineers through its undergraduate programs. With the growth of infrastructure construction in Kurdistan Region-Iraq, Department of Highway Engineering has been established to full fill that matter.
Highway engineering is a branch of civil engineering where Highway engineers are trained to be able to geometrically design a certain road or highway. Also, able to structurally design roads, bridges, and geotechnical structures such as shallow and deep footings; in addition to that enhance the knowledge and practice regarding other transportation facilities such as airports, railways and tunnels.
Highway engineer’s daily routine involves conducting studies that are related to road construction and provide the necessary advice when needed at the site. One main duty of Highway engineers is to determine the optimum location of bridges, interchanges, and culverts.
Vision
The vision of the Highway Engineering department is to impart knowledge and excellence in Highway Engineering and technology with global perspectives to our students and to be a stand-alone division in the field of precision engineering generating well-prepared graduates, and meeting the needs of society and renewable resources linked with rapid technology advancements and to make them ethically strong engineers to build our nation.
Mission
The mission of the Department of highway Engineering is to conduct graduates who possess technical competence in their chosen specialty area of Highway engineering, integrity, and a commitment to professional principles, as well as practical skills that will prepare them and promote innovative and original thinking in the of budding engineers to face the challenges of the future as well as to serve and contribute as innovators, professional engineers, and leaders in the region.
Goal
Highway & transportation industry is currently undergoing an unprecedented expansion fueled by worldwide economic growth, due to that there is an expanding need for highly skilled highway engineering professionals. The department aims to qualifying a graduated of the Highway & Transportation Engineering to be an applied engineer who has ability for designing, executing and maintaining various types of Roads, Transportation & Highway Projects and any construction relevant to that. Continuous improvement of educational programs and their outputs in order to achieve quality assurance and academic accreditation as well.
