Midwifery is one of the departments that present in Erbil and Soran technical institute. The reasons for opening this department were the necessity for having this field as there was very few information and knowledge about childbirth and how to take care of the mothers. Moreover, there is a good contact between the hospital and healthcare points and that department to train the recruiters.
The midwifery department has passed many rounds of graduation and prepared a lot of midwives to serve children and mothers and how to care about the women in pregnancy period as well as the first aid and giving treatments and injections. Also, the act of vaccination for the children and mothers to keep them away from the diseases.
Students in that department are taught the updated knowledge both theoretically and practically. At the same time seminars and workshops are done weekly and monthly with technology and the necessary resourced concerning their expertise to improve and producing experts to serve the children and women towards a bright future.

Minimum requirements for graduation programs include:
- Degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.00 scale (50% or more)
Objectives of the Midwifery Program
The major objective of the midwifery program is to prepare midwives who are able to provide effective and appropriate primary, secondary, and tertiary care to improve the health of women, newborns, and families in various settings. The program also prepares graduates to function independently among the health care team.
Upon completion the requirement of the Midwifery program graduates will be able to:
- Integrate theories from nursing, midwifery, and other disciplines to guide clinical practice and influence health policy.
- Demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking and the translation of research evidence into safe, competent, high quality, and evidence-based midwifery practice.
- Manage the care of women throughout the life span and their newborns by utilizing the midwifery management process.
- Function independently within an interprofessional framework to provide high quality midwifery care that is equitable, ethical, accessible, and respectful of human dignity, individuality, and diversity.
- Participate in a health care leadership role in collaboration with professional colleagues to maintain, reformulate, or refine systems of health care that are effective, efficient, and responsive to the needs of individuals and families with emphasis on women and infants.
- Demonstrate strong professional identity as midwife characterized by formal education, self and peer evaluation, lifelong individual learning, the appropriate use of technology, and the development and application of research to guide ethical and competent midwifery practice.
Vision
The department of midwifery nursing strives to be a center for innovation and excellence in nursing and midwifery education, leadership, and clinical practice at the local, regional levels.
Mission
The mission of the department is to graduate national professional competent nurses and midwives at the undergraduate and the graduate levels; and prepare graduates to be morally reflective healthcare leaders and, who can discover, disseminate and apply latest evidence-based nursing knowledge in order to save lives, and positively transform health and healthcare. The department efforts focus human health; and develop nursing and midwifery profession at the local, regional levels.
