Petroleum Technology / Chemical Analysis Department

Petroleum Technology / Chemical Analysis Department

The Petroleum Technology- Chemical Analysis department has been established in (2009) as a first petroleum technology department in Koya Technical Institute – Erbil Polytechnic University.

The study at the department is in the Bologna system for a period of two years, consisting of (4) semesters of approximately (120 ECTS) (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) of study for each semester, distributed according to the study plan on scientific and practical subjects containing the graduation research project in the fourth semester of the second academic year.

Objectives

1) Qualifying and preparing national intermediate cadres in the fields of oil
and gas, scientifically and practically, and granting them the required
certificate (technical diploma) to meet the needs of the oil sectors in the
Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
2) Developing technical skills of petroleum cadres through field and
practical training in the oil sectors.
3) Providing students with various analytical skills for oil and gas and their
products.
4) Providing services that meet the needs of society and preserve the
environment.
5) Preparing and holding training and development courses for laboratory
specializations in the oil and gas sector.
6) Continuous communication with companies and the conclusion of
agreements with universities, institutes and research centers.

General Learning Outcomes (GLO):

1.    Evaluate quality of crude oil.
2.    Identify the hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon components of oil and their effects on oil quality.
3.    Evaluate characteristics of oil and gas through laboratory experiments and the use of different techniques.
4.    Estimate of the amount of water, salts, minerals and impurities present in the oil.
5.    Improve the specifications of the products of the oil refining process.
6.    Produce fuel from non-oil sources.
7.    Detect importance of water in petroleum industries, how to recycled, and water laboratory tests used in determination quality of water.
8.    Learn about the different separation techniques used in the oil industries.
9.    Familiarise with the laboratory equipment and instruments used in assessing the characteristics of oil and gas.
10.   Learn about the different materials and methods used in the petrochemical industries.

Program Learning Outcome (PLO)

Areas of work of graduates of this department:

1- Chemical analysis and crude oil evaluation laboratories in oil fields and refineries.
2- Laboratories for chemical analysis and evaluation of oil products (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, engine oil and bitumen) in oil refineries.
3-Chemical analysis and gas evaluation laboratories (natural gas and gas fields).
4- Laboratories for analysis of building materials and roads.
 5- Engine oil re-refining laboratories.
 6- Laboratories of petrochemical industries.
 7-Water laboratories.

8- Chemical analysis laboratories in factories (cement, detergent manufacturing, food canning factories), etc

Minimum requirements for graduation programs include:

  • Degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.00 scale (50% or more)

Vision

Theoretical and practical education, training and use of different methods and
technologies of analysis and evaluation in oil and gas fields.

Mission

Work on excellence in teaching, training, community and environment service
through the educational programs offered by the department.
