Department of Midwifery is established in hawler technical institute on the academic year 2012, aimed to graduate students in high quality and make them ready to every area in the country.

The Department of Midwifery is focused on supporting and improving the health of mothers and their babies, families and cares. It has a team of around 6 clinical teachers, tutors, lecturers, and senior lecturers, and educates pre-registration midwives.   

We offer a route to registration: Midwifery with Registration as a Midwife Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery Practice. We also offer a large range of professional development modules, and research programmers. These include clinical specialisms in a range of areas across maternal and infant health.    

Research in the Department of Midwifery focuses on a number of areas in maternity care and maternal and infant health, including weight management, mental health, abuse, breastfeeding, and birth planning amongst many other topics. 

Our teaching and research allow the Department of Midwifery to develop and deliver an excellent education, so that our students can offer high-quality midwifery care to mothers, babies, families and cares.  

Through innovative approaches to teaching and learning, we provide our students with the very best opportunities and supports to pursue their studies in order to become safe, effective, skilled and knowledgeable professional practitioners of nursing or midwifery. We strongly support the principle of equal access and encourage all students and staff to achieve their full potential within an open, liberal and facilitative environment.

Midwifery Education Program will be internationally recognized for excellence in teaching, research and leadership in Midwifery.

Mission Statement

Midwifery is an important component of women’s health care. Midwives’ expertise in the care of normal pregnancy and childbirth arises from their understanding of childbearing as a social, cultural and biological process and from their ability to competently exercise clinical skills and decision-making.

 The mission of Midwifery Department is to prepare professional midwives who provide holistic care to women, newborns, and their families throughout the lifespan. This will positively reflect on decreasing maternal-newborn morbidity and mortality rates as well as improve the quality of health care services provided to women, newborns, and their families.

Educational objectives of the department

The major objective of the midwifery program is to prepare midwives who are able to provide effective and appropriate primary, secondary, and tertiary care to improve the health of women, newborns, and families in various settings. The program also prepares graduates to function independently among the health care team.

Student Outcomes

 The graduate of the midwifery program will be able to:

  1. Integrate knowledge from social, medical, midwifery and nursing sciences when providing care to women, newborns and families.
  2. Collaborate with other health care providers when providing care for women, newborns, and families.
  3. Advocate for the empowerment of women and their families.
  4. Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills in addition to and understanding of research-based knowledge to promote evidence-based practice.
  5. Utilize research findings in developing the midwifery profession and raising the quality of health care provided to clients.
  6. Continue personal and professional growth that promotes independent, lifelong learning.
  7. Act as a change agent to meet the rising needs of the Jordanian society.
  8. Recognize and appreciate the regional diversity that reflects the nature of the Jordanian society when providing care to clients.
  9. Participate in professional midwifery organizations for the advancement of the profession and client care.
  • Maintain close links with national, regional, and international professional midwifery communities.

Departments Scientific Activities

Midwifery is the health science and health profession that deals with pregnancy, 

childbirth, and the postpartum period (including care of the newborn), besides sexual and reproductive health of women throughout their lives. In many countries, midwifery is a medical profession (special for its independent and direct specialized education; should not be confused with the medical specialty, which depends on a previous general training). A professional in midwifery is known as a midwife.

Midwifery Department  teaches midwife with a personal touch. Committed to providing small classes and individualized instruction, the faculty make teaching and interacting with students their top priority. department are experts in their fields of study and teach all technical institute courses. There is very close interaction – students are considered a valued partner in education.

  • Departments Alumni

We are as the  midwifery Department are proud withe our alumni whom now are serving all around the country especially at kurdistan region . our department has fourteen  batches of alumni for the academic year 2012-2013 to 2017-2018 . The number of graduate for the academic year 2017-2018 ( 106 ) students.

Department has close contact net with our alumni.

Midwifery duties and responsibilities

Midwifery Model of Care
 Is a women-centered approach in which pregnancy, labor, and postpartum are viewed as normal natural processes with physiological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions that require minimal medical interventions and interferences. The focus of the midwifery model is on monitoring the health and well-being of women, newborns, and families throughout childrearing, health promotion, health education, and counseling.

It is a process of purposeful judgment which is based on cognitive skills of inquiry, interpretation, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation to guide midwifery practice.

Communication
Is defined as a dynamic process, which includes a sender, receiver and a message. This process includes intra/interdisciplinary effective communication such as collaboration, consultation, coordination, documentation, and conflict resolution in variety of health care settings

Management and leadership
Defined as the knowledge and skills that will be utilized by the midwife in dealing with patients, families, colleagues and supervisors. Midwives will serve as change agents in the health care settings and empower clients to maintain well-being.

Professional Development
Is the attainment of knowledge base, skills, professional tasks and values that are necessary for personal growth and life-long commitment to the midwifery profession.
