Medical Laboratory Technology Department

The Medical Laboratory Technology Department (MLT) started in (2001) as a third medical Department in Koya Technical Institute. Its excellent and realistic education provides traditional courses as well as extensive experience in actual clinical laboratories. Lectures and labs provide students with a substantial knowledge base as well as fundamental skills and techniques.

The duration of study at the Institute is two years in addition to summer training. The student receives the basic knowledge and skills necessary in his / her specialization. The graduate is awarded a technical diploma within the job description of a technical assistant.

Objectives

  1. Develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills in the performance of clinical laboratory procedures needed to help the physician in the proper diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention of diseases;
  2. Develop skills in critical and analytical thinking to advance knowledge in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science and contribute to the challenges of the profession.
  3. Develop leadership skills and to promote competence and excellence.
  4. Support moral and ethical values in the service of society and in the practice of the profession.

General Learning Outcomes (GLO):

Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate professional responsibility by exhibiting organizational skills, accountability, and ethical behavior
  2. Evaluate clinical laboratory data by interpreting laboratory results and relating the data to various disease states
  3. Demonstrate professional communication skills by relaying lab test information, seeking assistance as needed, and pursuing communication with the appropriate healthcare professional
  4. Demonstrate technology skills by operating laboratory equipment for testing, assessing quality assurance for lab equipment, and adhering to standard safety practices in the laboratory environment
  5. Operate as a vital member of the medical laboratory team by collaborating effectively, completing assigned tasks, and providing assistance to other team members.
  6. Exhibit awareness of diversity in the healthcare field by identifying the individual needs of the patient, applying appropriate accommodations, and recognizing the diversity of the patient’ culture and health circumstances.
  7. Exhibit essential employability qualities by demonstrating laboratory safety, analysing laboratory results, and displaying professional conduct.

Program Learning Outcome (PLO)

  1. Graduates will apply knowledge of entry-level skills to accurately perform testing in all areas of the medical laboratory.
  2. Graduates will evaluate clinical laboratory data and relate that data to various disease processes.
  3. Graduates will comply with laboratory safety regulations and standards.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate the elements of professionalism to operate as respected members of the health care team.
  5. Graduates will employ interpersonal communication skills in relaying laboratory test information and when interacting with patients, lab personnel and other health care professionals.

Minimum requirements for graduation programs include:

  • Degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.00 scale (60% or more)

Vision

The graduates play a pivotal role in the provision of quality health care and the ability to effectively communicate and interact with patients, physicians and other health professionals, in a manner consistent with employer standards.

Mission

The primary purpose of the Medical Laboratory Technology department is to provide a learning environment in which institution, staff and students can discover, examine critically, preserve and transmit the knowledge, wisdom and values that will help ensure the survival of this and future generations and improve the quality of life for all.

To satisfy the department mission the students will be educate medical science principles to become outstanding lab technician who have skills, knowledge, and passion to improve public health of Kurdistan people through in-class education, practice and clerkship within medical laboratories and hospital laboratories.
